Props + Sets

John Geary was born and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey. At an early age, he knew he was going to be an artist. He went to college at University of the Arts in Philladelphia, PA, where he majored in sculpture. While in college, John met playwright, Greg Giovanni and began designing sets and props for the infamous Big Mess Theatre Company.

John moved to LA in 1993 to attend graduate school at UCLA where he studied fine art with some of the most progressive minds in the art world. While a grad student, John often worked with UCLA film students, art directing their projects. One day, he was asked by a colleague to work on a Nike commercial. From there, John never looked back, going to work on many commercials with various production companies.

Drawn to the intimacy, spontaneity, and collaboration of photography, John gradually shifted from working in film, to still photography.  In 1999 John began working at Playboy Studio West in Santa Monica. There he gained valuable experience in the day-to-day workings of an in-house photography studio where ambitious sets are constructed and broken down on a daily basis. He made connections with many photographers that soon began hiring him on their fashion and advertising jobs. Over time John developed a diverse body of work including fashion shoots for Esquire and Vogue Italy, advertising shoots for Got Milk? and Nike, and celebrity shoots with Melissa McCarthy and Kanye West.

When not on location or working on set, John is making art or tinkering with inventions. He holds two US Patents, (one pending), and has exhibited his artwork around the world, including solo exhibits in Los Angeles and New York. He plays guitar and bass and is currently learning the cello. He has performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Roundhouse in London with the Glen Branca Orchestra. John is an avid tennis player and enjoys cycling near his home in Santa Monica.
